Visitors to the Galapagos Islands are eager to learn about the culture, country and eco-system. We encourage you to study up before your Galapagos Island tour to gain a better appreciation for this one-of-a-kind region of the world. Here are ten tips to help immerse yourself into the people and culture:
- Put on your high school thinking cap and brush off your Spanish Dictionary. Ecuadorians enjoy it when you show a bit of effort in speaking their language. Don't by shy either, they've probably heard worse accents!
- Think "local." The way you contribute to local business detrimentally affects the economy. You'll find amazing, hand-made products and souvenirs, delicious food and even local brews. Remember, even a $2 key chain made by a local artist might not seem like a big deal to you, but it may really help the local artisan.
- Pick adventures and activities that fully introduce you to the people and culture.
- As you make purchases for souvenirs or go dining, be sure you are not supporting a business (even if it's local) that exploit endangered species.
- Visitors often come to Latin American countries and bargain. It's no different in Ecuador or the Galapagos Islands as it's fully practiced amongst locals and visitors alike. Remember, an amount that really is small to you, is probably a large amount to the seller.
- Before taking pictures or videotaping people you don't know, please ask them. They'll, more than likely, say yes but it's a nice courtesy and they would actually love a copy of the picture in return.
- Embrace the practice and standards of "Leave No Trace." This is a very sacred and protected land, please respect it by disposing of garbage, food, etc...in the appropriate places.
- It might sound trivial but plastic bags on the islands are becoming quite a problem. If someone offers to put your souvenir in a plastic bag, please say no.

- While you are on your vacation, keep your eye out for a good program to support once you return home. There are many worthy organizations that protect the health and welfare of both the land and people.
